Daniel Amit

Israeli physicist and pacifist (1938–2007)

Daniel Amit was a distinguished Israeli and Italian physicist and pacifist, born in 1938 and passing away in 2007. Although often associated with astronomy, his actual field of expertise lay elsewhere. Amit's work had a profound impact on the scientific community, particularly in the realm of computational neuroscience, where he emerged as a pioneer.

Amit's most notable contribution came in collaboration with Hanoch Gutfreund and Haim Sompolinsky, through a series of groundbreaking papers known as the ASG papers. Together, they successfully demonstrated the application of statistical mechanics in neural network research, thereby establishing theoretical and computational neuroscience as a novel and rigorous approach to brain research. This innovative work introduced powerful concepts, models, and standards to the field, leaving a lasting legacy in the scientific community.
