David Simonsen
dansk overrabbiner, filantrop, bogsamler og forfatter (1853-1932)
David Simonsen was a prominent figure in Danish Judaism, serving as the Chief Rabbi of Denmark on two separate occasions, from 1892 to 1902 and again from 1919 to 1920. Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, Simonsen pursued his academic interests in Oriental languages at the University of Copenhagen. This foundation in languages would later complement his rabbinical training, which he received at the Jewish Theological Seminary in Breslau.
Simonsen's education at the Jewish Theological Seminary in Breslau was significant, as it was a hub for the "Wissenschaft des Judentums" movement. This movement emphasized the importance of scientifically studying Jewish history, literature, and culture, in addition to traditional Jewish sources. With this comprehensive education, Simonsen was well-equipped to lead the Jewish community in Denmark as Chief Rabbi, a position he held with distinction during his two terms of service.
