Moses ben Elijah Bashyazi

Karaite scholar (1537–1555)

Moses ben Elijah Bashyazi was a prominent Karaite scholar who lived from 1537 to 1555. Born in Constantinople, he demonstrated exceptional learning abilities and proficiency in foreign languages from a young age. At just 16 years old, his knowledge and intellectual curiosity were already noteworthy. Driven by a passion for knowledge, Bashyazi embarked on a journey to the Land of Israel and Syria, where he explored the regions and collected ancient manuscripts.

Despite his short life, Bashyazi produced a significant body of work, with four of his manuscripts still extant. His writings include "Sefer Yehudah" on prohibited marriages, "Zebach Pesach" on festival celebrations, "Matteh Elohim" which explores the Karaite-Rabbinic schism and Karaite tradition, and "Sefer Reuben" on dogmas and articles of belief. In his works, Bashyazi drew upon the writings of earlier authors, such as Joseph ben Abraham and Jeshua ben Judah, and incorporated quotes from notable commentaries, including those of Jacob Qirqisani and Daniel al-Kumisi. Through his scholarly contributions, Bashyazi left a lasting impact on the field of philosophy and Karaite studies.
