Proto-Zionism
19th century Jewish thinkers
Proto-Zionism refers to a group of 19th-century Jewish thinkers who were influenced by the rising tide of modern nationalism in Europe. These individuals, active primarily between 1860 and 1874, were driven by a desire to establish a Jewish homeland in the Land of Israel. Their efforts were characterized by a sense of activism, as they sought to lay the groundwork for a Jewish state.
As precursors to the Zionist movement, these thinkers played a significant role in shaping the intellectual and ideological foundations of the movement. Their work predates the emergence of practical Zionism in 1881 and political Zionism in 1896, earning them the designation of proto-Zionists. Through their writings and activities, they helped to pave the way for the development of Zionism as a distinct political and ideological force.
