Shlomo Goren

Polish-born Israeli rabbi (1917–1994)

Shlomo Goren was a prominent Israeli rabbi and Talmudic scholar, born in Poland in 1917. As an Orthodox Jew and adherent of Religious Zionism, he established himself as a leading authority on Jewish religious law, or halakha. His extensive knowledge and expertise in this field earned him great respect within the Jewish community. Goren's career was marked by several notable positions, including his role as a founder and head of the Military Rabbinate of the Israel Defense Forces, which he held from 1948 to 1968.

Goren's subsequent appointments included serving as the Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv-Jaffa from 1968 to 1972, after which he was elected as the Chief Rabbi of Israel, a position he held until his retirement in 1983. As the fourth Ashkenazi Jew to hold this office, he played a significant role in shaping the country's religious landscape. Following his retirement, Goren went on to establish and lead a yeshiva in Jerusalem, where he continued to share his knowledge and wisdom with future generations of Jewish scholars. He passed away in 1994, leaving behind a legacy as a renowned rabbinical legal authority and a dedicated servant of the Jewish community.
