Jacobo Timerman

Argentine publisher, journalist and author (1923–1999)

Jacobo Timerman was a prominent Argentine publisher, journalist, and author, born in 1923 to Soviet parents. His career in literature and journalism led him to become a vocal critic of the Argentine military regime, particularly during the Dirty War, a period marked by widespread repression and human rights abuses. Through his work, Timerman bravely confronted and reported on the atrocities committed by the regime, shedding light on the estimated 30,000 political prisoners who were disappeared.

Timerman's courageous journalism came at a great personal cost, as he was persecuted, tortured, and imprisoned by the Argentine junta in the late 1970s. In 1979, he and his wife were exiled to Israel, where they continued to advocate for human rights and freedom of the press. Despite the challenges he faced, Timerman was widely recognized and honored for his contributions to journalism and publishing, leaving a lasting legacy as a champion of truth and justice. He passed away in 1999, leaving behind a remarkable body of work that continues to inspire and inform readers to this day.
