Shulamit Ran is a renowned Israeli-American composer, born in 1949. At the age of 14, she relocated to New York City to pursue her musical education as a scholarship student at the Mannes College of Music. This marked the beginning of her journey in the United States, where she would eventually establish herself as a prominent figure in the music world. Her compositional talents have been recognized and celebrated globally, with her works being performed by a diverse range of orchestras and chamber groups.
Ran's achievements in music composition are notable, with her Symphony, completed in 1990, earning her the prestigious Pulitzer Prize for Music. This accolade made her the second woman to receive the award, following in the footsteps of Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, who won in 1983. In addition to her compositional pursuits, Ran has had a distinguished academic career, serving as a professor of music composition at the University of Chicago from 1973 to 2015.
